History Program

The Tireless Dialogue between Past and Present: How Have People Lived?

In order to know ourselves, know others, and know the way forward, we must first understand history. In the History Program, students learn about how to collect and read various historical documents and materials, examine for themselves the different cultures and customs of the past, and sharpen their intellects and sensibilities. Students also learn to independently identify problems, figure them out based on concrete evidence, and present their results. Through these, the program prepares students for today’s international society, training them to deeply understand the core of problems and then take on the challenge of solving them.

Educational Policy

Students who wish to enroll in the History Program first study introductory history in their first year, to learn fundamental knowledge and methodology for the field as a whole. From the second year on, students take practical subjects chosen through reference to their chosen study model, for a practical education in how to read historical research papers, and how to analyze and read historical documents. Students also take overview classes, special lectures, and practical seminars to acquire specialized knowledge, based on their study models’ recommendations and their own interests. The most important of these are the practical seminars: students read historical documents and materials, and engage with both the instructors and other students to develop their problem-finding and problem-solving skills.
