Japanese and Chinese Language and Literature Program

Getting to the Heart of Japan and China through Deep Study of Language and Literature

China developed its large cultural sphere by incorporating elements from its surroundings, while Japan has developed its own unique cultural identity while incorporating elements of Chinese culture. This program looks at the commonalities, uniqueness, and diversity of both of these cultures, and is recommended for students who wish to explore topics centered around Japanese language and literature, students who wish to develop a deeper understanding of China by studying Chinese language and literature, and students who wish to study the languages and literatures of both Japan and China.

Educational Policy

Students study a broad variety of introductory linguistics and literature subjects in the humanities foundational education subjects, combined with specialized program subjects (lectures and practical seminars in Japanese and Chinese language and literature) in order to acquire foundational knowledge in Japanese and Chinese language and literature. Students also develop a deeper understanding of the languages and cultures of Japan and China, and learn and practice the techniques to compare the two. In addition, students not only improve their ability to read works of classical literature, but also further develop their modern linguistic expression and communication skills.
